Waiouru School
In the extreme climatic environment of Waiouru, we responded to the brief by designing the new school around an internal ‘learning street’. Six teaching spaces and library share the common area, which opens to the benign easterly quarter. Outdoor learning spaces, kiva, hardcourts and fields were all planned on a ‘greenfields’ site. An existing community hall was utilised by relocating it from a nearby site. A strong ‘spine wall’ delineates the teaching and non teaching areas and extends right through the project as a feature wall.
