Francis Douglas Memorial College New Science Block, New Plymouth
The brief was to relocate three science teaching spaces from an existing three storey block. Various sites were considered and a central location selected with access to existing circulation. The layout was developed in close consultation with the teaching staff to allow shared use of resource, preparation and dangerous goods store. Simple yet striking forms were built of red brick, a campus idiom, and cedar, which express the three spaces. Careful consideration was given to creating quality learning spaces, with acoustic absorption, lighting, ventilation and heating.
